In her first year teaching, Indianapolis fourth-grade teacher Kristina Campbell created a mini-economy system. Students earn "money" for doing jobs in the classroom and lose money for not turning in homework, wasting time in class, or having behavior difficulties. Throughout the year, students exchange the money they earn for established classroom rewards. At the end of the school year, Campbell holds an auction. Students bring in lightly-used items -- such as toys, books, and games -- they no longer want, and use their remaining "money" to bid on those items.
