Homework Teams

Inspire cooperation and motivate students to do their work outside of class with homework teams. In small groups, have students rotate the roles of coach, scorekeeper, manager, and pinch hitter.

  • The coach gathers the team and reviews the roles of the members and its goals.
  • The scorekeeper records the number of completed homework assignments submitted by the group.
  • As "manager," a student calculates the team's score and determines whether the group has "won" or "lost" by comparing the results with the team's goals.
  • The pinch hitter fills in when a team member is not in class.

To add to the effectiveness of this strategy, post a bulletin board where teams may track their successful "seasons" (grading periods).
