"Providing structured learning activities for use of the Internet, as opposed to passive, aimless browsing, is one of the great challenges facing educators," says teacher Euan Bradley. That's why Bradley created MacDougall MacDougall in Time, a multidisciplinary, Web- and e-mail-based project for students in grades six to eight.
Participants track down the elusive MacDougall MacDougall, an imaginary Scottish time traveler and "misadventurer," who is hiding somewhere in time. Each week, two new locations are revealed. After students complete a series of exercises and answer a key question, "MacDougall" responds by e-mail with the Web address of the next location.
Bradley's love of adventure games inspired his creation of the Web site. He liked the idea of challenging students to chase a character by following a series of clues in a given time frame. The challenge was to not make the game too "ponderous" for students, said Bradley. Humor is an essential ingredient to maintain their interest.
The aim of "MacDougall MacDougall in Time" is to encourage students to work and learn collaboratively and to have fun in the process, Bradley told Education World. It is designed to teach participants interesting facts about their world and to familiarize them with a range of Web-based technologies.
