Grade: 3

Lesson Objective: To solve hockey word problems involving time

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.1- Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.

  • Why is telling time important?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Telling time helps us to know when it is time to go places, like school, a lesson or sport practice.  It also helps us to know when to wake up and when to eat meals.
  • Being able to tell time is something that everyone learns.  There are two different types of clocks, digital and analog. 
  • Analog clocks have hour, minute and sometimes second hands. 
  • We know that there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day.
  • When trying to figure out how much time you have until something happens, or how much time you need to wait, it is best to use addition and subtraction.
  • For example, if you knew that it was 8:05 and you had to get on the bus at 8;20, you would use subtraction.  You would do 20-5 to figure out that you had 15 minutes left until the bus came.
  • Now, you are going to be solving some word problems.  All of the word problems are about time.  You will be using either addition or subtraction to solve the problems.  When you are done, we will go over all of the answers.
