Lesson Plan: Hockey

Subject:  Social Studies

Grade: 3

Lesson Objective: To learn about the history of hockey and answer questions about what has been learned

Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

  • Who do you think were the first people to play hockey?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • People have been playing games for thousands of years.  Usually games were played with items that were easily found, like sticks and rocks.
  • What kind of games would you play if you had sticks and rocks?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • You can hit rocks with sticks on the ground, you can pass them back and forth between sticks and you can hit them in the air.
  • This is how people started playing many sports, including hockey.  People who lived thousands of years invented many sports and didn’t even know it!
  • Most of the people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago probably did not play games on ice, so that was something that was added later.
  • You are going to be reading about the history of hockey and learning more about how the game went from a game being played with sticks and rocks to a game played on ice.
  • You are then going to answer questions about what you have read.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share)
