# Lesson Plan: Stars (Math - GR K)

Subject:  Math

Grade: K

Lesson Objective: To solve addition problems within 10

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.2- Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

Materials:

• Attached worksheet

Starter:

Say:

• What does it mean to add numbers?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

• When you add numbers, you are putting them together.  For example, if you are adding one plus one, you are putting those numbers together to see how many you now have.  How many would you have after adding one and one together?  (Allow the students to answer.)  When you add one plus one, you get two.
• You can add numbers by counting to see how many there are.  For example, when we add one plus one, you can hold up one finger on each hand and then count them to get two.
• Counting your fingers is a good way to figure out an addition problem.  Another good way to figure out an addition problem is by drawing or counting pictures.
• If there is an addition problem that does not have a picture, you can draw your own.  For example, if you have the problem two plus two, you can draw two circles for the first two and two circles for the second two (do this on the board to demonstrate).  You are then able to use your own drawings to help you figure out that the answer is four.
• If there are already pictures there for you, all you need to do is count them to figure out the answer.
• Today, you are going to be adding numbers using pictures.  The worksheet that I am going to give you has an addition problem and it also has pictures.  You the pictures to help you figure out the answer to the addition problem.
• Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

• Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
