Lesson Plan: Snow (Writing - Grade 2)

Lesson Objective: To write an informational piece explaining what was learned about snow

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.2- Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Do you like to share information that you have learned?  Why or why not?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Sharing information that you have learned with other people can be fun.  It is fun to have exciting or interesting information to share.  It is also fun to learn information from other people.
  • What are some interesting things that you have learned from other people?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Today you have learned about snow.  Many of you may already have known some facts about snow, but you probably did not know everything that we talked about.
  • Think about the most interesting fact you learned about snow today.  Why do you think it is the most interesting?
  • You are going to be writing about what you learned about snow.  When you are writing, make sure that you first introduce the topic that you are writing about.  You should then add the facts that you learned.  Last, you should write a concluding or ending statement.
  • When you are deciding which facts to write about, think about what you would want to learn about snow if someone was sharing information with you.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
