Lesson Plan: Plants (Reading - GR 1)

Lesson Objective: To read the poem, “Life of a Plant,” and then answer questions about the poem

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.4- Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

Materials:

Say:

  • What are some types of plants?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • There are so many different types of plants.  There are flowers, fruits, vegetables, bushes and trees.
  • Do you have a favorite plant?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Plants are all around us and we often do not even notice them.  Taking time to look around and see all of the different types of plants is fun.
  • Do you know what plants need to grow?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Plants need soil, water and sun to grow.  Today, we are going to be talking more about plants and the life cycle of a plant.  The life cycle is the changes that a living thing goes through during its life.
  • Plants start as seeds.  There are many different types of seeds depending on the type of plant.  The seeds either fall to the ground or are placed in the ground.  With enough water and sun, the start to grow!
  • Raise your hand if you have ever planted or grown seeds.  It is so much fun watching the stems start to poke through the soil and the plant to grow.
  • I am going to read you a poem called “Life of  Plant.”  While you are listening, pay attention to the words and what you are imagining as I read.  (Read the poem to the students.)
  • Does anyone have any questions about the poem?  Is there anything that you do not understand?  (Allow the students to ask questions and answer to the best of your ability)
  • I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about “Life of a Plant.” 
  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
