Lesson Plan: Migration (Writing - Grade K)

Lesson Objective: To write an informational piece about migration

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.2- Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.




  • What is something interesting that you learned about migration today?  (Allow the students to answer.)



  • When we learn about something new and interesting, we often want to share what we learned with other people.
  • What are some ways that you can share what you learned?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • You can share by talking to someone, showing someone a book or pictures or even writing about what you learned.
  • When you are speaking to someone, they are able to ask you questions to get more information.
  • When you are writing, you need to think about what you want someone to know and write about as many details as you can.  You should think about what you would want to know and the questions that you would have and then write those things down.
  • Today, you are going to be writing about migration.  You are going to think about what you learned about migration and then you will write a few words explaining what you know.
  • What are some words that you can think of?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • You could write about why animals migrate, such as food, water, having babies or weather.  You should also draw a picture showing what you are writing about.
  • For example, Animals migrate to get food.  You would then draw a picture of an animal eating.
  • Does anyone have any questions?



  • Who would like to share what you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
