Lesson Plan: Insects (Writing - Grade 2)

Lesson Objective: To write a narrative pretending to be an insect and describing what your body looks like

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3- Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.




  • Have you ever pretended to be someone or something else?  (Allow the students to answer.)



  • Pretending to be something else can be so much fun.  Using your imagination is a great way to play and be creative.
  • When using your imagination, you can pretend to be a different person, an animal or even something that is not really alive!
  • We have learned a lot about insects.  We have learned that they have an exoskeleton, they have three body parts, they have six legs and they have antenna.  Some insects have two sets of wings and some have no wings.
  • We learned that insects can live anywhere in the world as long as they have food to eat.
  • We learned that insects are the largest group of animals.
  • You are now going to be pretending to be an insect.  You are going to describe what your body looks like.  Remember to use as many details as you can.  Think about what you learned about an insect’s body.  Then, you will be sharing what you wrote.
  • Does anyone have any questions?



  • Who would like to share the story that you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
