Lesson Plan: Insects (Reading - Grade 1)

Lesson Objective: To read the poem, “Songs of Summer,” and then answer questions about the poem

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.4- Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.




  • What is an insect?  (Allow the students to answer.)



  • Insects are also known as bugs.  An insect has six legs and usually has one or two sets of wings.
  • What type of insects can you think of?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Some people like insects and some people do not like them at all.
  • There are some insects that are really helpful to people, such as a honeybee or a ladybug.
  • There are insects that are very annoying and can even be harmful.  Mosquitoes, aphids and bed bugs are all insects that can be harmful to people or the fruits and vegetables that they plant.
  • Where do you usually see insects?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Sometimes insects make their way inside of people’s homes, but they are usually outside.
  • What seasons do you think insects like best?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Insects do not like cold weather.  Most insects hibernate or sleep during the winter months.  Insects are usually outside in the spring, summer and fall.
  • I am going to read you a poem called “Songs of Summer.”  While you are listening, pay attention to whether or not there is a part of the poem that reminds you of something that you have seen or heard.  (Read the poem to the students.)
  • Does anyone have any questions about the poem?  Is there anything that you do not understand?  (Allow the students to ask questions and answer to the best of your ability)
  • I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about “Songs of Summer.” 
  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?



  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
