Lesson Plan: Animal Homes

Grade: 3

Lesson Objective: To read a poem about animal homes and answer questions while referring to different stanzas of the poem

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.5- Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections.




  • What animal homes can you think of?  (Allow the students to answer.)



  • Today, we are going to be talking about animal homes.  There are many different types of animal homes. 
  • Some of the animal homes that we think of for animals that live in the wild are nests, dens and burrows. 
  • Some of the animal homes that we think of for animals that are pets or farm animals are kennels, barns and cages.
  • All animals move differently, have different needs, eat different food and have different types of families.  Because of this, animals live in very different homes.
  • Animals such as birds, squirrels, possums and monkeys live in trees.
  • Animals such as moles, rabbits, groundhogs and mice live in burrows.
  • Animals such as hamsters, guinea pigs and reptiles live in cages in people’s homes.
  • Today, we are going to be reading a poem about animal homes.
  • While I read the poem to you, I would like you to be thinking about what the poem is referring to and also be thinking about the different animal homes that are mentioned. (Read the poem)
  • I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about the poem.  I will also be giving you a copy of the poem so that you can read it to yourself.
  • After you have finished reading the poem again and doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?



  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
