# Lesson Plan: Animal Homes (Math - GR 1)

Subject:  Math

Lesson Objective: To order objects by length

Common Core StandardCCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.1- Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.

Materials:

• Why would we need to know how long something is?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

• Some of the reasons that we would need to know the length of an object is to figure out if it would fit in a specific area or so that we could add something new to it.
• For example, you need to know the length of your legs so that you can get new pants that fit.
• When measuring the length of an object, what object could you use?  (Allow the students to answer.)
• You could use a ruler, yard stick or tape measure to measure the length of an object.
• Did you know that you could also use another object?  If you wanted to know how long your desk was, you could use your hand to measure it.
• Sometimes we need to know the length of two objects so that we can figure out which one is longer or shorter.
• You can do this by measuring with a ruler.  You can also do this by using another object to compare them.
• For example, if I was going to compare the length of two of you, I could use the door as the third object.  I would have two of you go stand next to the door and then look to see who is longer.  (Demonstrate this).
• You can do this same thing when you are comparing the length of objects on paper.
• Today, you are going to be comparing the lengths of different animal homes.
• You are going to be looking at different pictures of animal homes.  You will be using a book to compare the length of the objects to help you answer the questions.
