Lesson Plan: Hibernation (Gr 1)

Subject:  Writing

Grade: 1

Lesson Objective: To write an opinion piece about what food they would eat to get ready to hibernate

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1- Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Do you think it would be fun to hibernate?  Why or why not?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • You just gave or thought about your opinion about whether it would be fun to hibernate.  Giving an opinion means you are telling someone what you think or how you feel about something else.
  • Giving an opinion is something that people do all of the time.  People give their opinion about what food they want to eat, what they want to do, who they want to see, what they want to read and so many other things!
  • You can give an opinion by speaking what you think or how you feel.  You can also give an opinion by writing about what you think or how you feel.
  • Today, you are going to be writing an opinion.  You will start by saying what you think or how you feel.  Then, you need to give a reason for having that opinion.  If you do not give a reason, the reader will not know why you feel the way that you do.
  • The last thing you do is write an ending.
  • For example, “I like to wear sweatpants.  They are very comfortable and warm.  If I did not wear sweatpants, I would not be comfortable and warm.”  (Write this on the board for the students to see)
  • You are now going to be giving your opinion about the foods that you would eat to get ready to hibernate.  Pretend that you, as a person, are going to hibernate.  What foods would you eat?  Raise your hand if you know your opinion.  Can you think of a reason that you would choose those foods?  Great!  You will now start writing.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share what you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
