Main:
Say:
- Hibernation is when an animal or plant spends the winter sleeping or resting.
- Why do you think animals hibernate? (Allow the students to answer.)
- Animals hibernate because they cannot find food to eat in the winter. Animals such as bears, frogs, woodchucks and chipmunks all eat plants, berries or nuts.
- Plants, berries and nuts do not grow in the winter and so if the animals did not hibernate, they would have nothing to do.
- Instead, they spend the fall eating and storing as much food as they can. As the days get shorter and colder, they know that it is time to hibernate.
- They find a place to hibernate and then sleep through the winter.
- Different animals hibernate in different places. Frogs hibernate in the bottom of lakes and toad hibernate underground. Chipmunks and woodchucks dig burrows underground that they hibernate in.
- Bears hibernate in dens that they dig or in caves that they find.
- Today, we are going to read the book, Bear Snores On. Raise your hand if you have read this book before.

- After you listen to the story, we are going to do a worksheet together.
