Grades: 3-4

Have students finish the story:

    Opening Story lines:

    • A fresh batch of cookies had just been taken out of the oven and were sitting on the counter cooling.  Ethan and his mom had made cookies for his birthday party.  They had made 50 cookies to make sure that there were enough for all of his friends to have at least 3 cookies.
    • Ethan and his mom cleaned up.  His dogs Benson and Theo were sleeping on the floor.  Ethan’s little brother, Trevor, was playing in his room.  Ethan decided to go sit on the couch and read a book while he waited for the cookies to cool.
    • After a while, Ethan got up and went in to the kitchen because he wanted to try one of the cookies.  When he got to the kitchen, he saw that there was a cookie missing.  He decided to try to figure out who took the cookie.

Have students continue writing this story and explain who took the cookie and how Ethan figured it out.

    Writing prompts:

    • What did Ethan do after he figured out who took the cookie?
    • Add illustrations to help the reader envision the end of your story.
