Story Starter: Merlin the Tortoise Meets a New Friend

Use these fun and engaging digital "story starters" for motivating student writing.  Perfect for remote learning!

Each story starter includes the opening story lines with key characters followed by writing prompts to help students finish the story.

Have students finish the story:

Opening Story lines:

  • Merlin has been thinking about the adventure that he took with his new friend, Scarlet the chickadee.  He is going outside again today and is hoping to have another adventure.

  • Merlin’s family brought him outside, put him down in the grass and went off to play.  After Merlin ate clover and dandelions, he looked around for Scarlet.  Instead of Scarlet, he saw a chipmunk.  The chipmunk was sitting up and looking right at him.

  • The chipmunk came over to him and said, “My name is Henry.  Scarlet told me about your adventure with her and it sounds like fun.  I am looking for a new place to dig a burrow.  Would you like to come with me”

On the next few slides, continue writing this story and explain what happened with Merlin and Henry.

Writing prompts:

  • Does Merlin go with Henry?

  • What do Merlin and Henry end up doing?

  • Add illustrations to help the reader envision the end of your story.
