Lesson: Varying Sentence Length and Structure

When reviewing students' writing assignments, do you find that kids' sentences all sound the same?

Using this exercise from TLA, Inc. (The Literacy Ambassador), help students in grades 4-12 revise their writing to improve fluency, variety and word choice.

The standards-based activity involves using concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.

For example:

A sentence ending in a noun...

A rolling stone gathers no moss.

Might be revised to a sentence ending in an adverb...

When trying to rid your stone of moss, roll it quickly.
