Lesson Plan: The Power of Explicit Instruction

explicit instruction

Grade Level: 3–5
Duration: 45–60 minutes
Focus: Understanding and applying explicit instruction through gradual release

Objective

Students will:

  • Understand what explicit instruction means.

  • Identify the components of the gradual release model (I Do, We Do, You Do Together, You Do Alone).

  • Apply the model to learn a new academic skill.

Materials

  • Chart paper or whiteboard

  • Markers

  • Short reading passage (grade-level appropriate)

  • Highlighters

  • Exit ticket slips

  • Printable Worksheet

Standards Alignment (Generalized)

  • Reading comprehension standards (main idea and key details)

  • Speaking & listening standards (collaborative discussion)

  • Writing standards (clear explanations)

Lesson Steps

1. Warm-Up (5–10 minutes)

Ask students:

  • “Have you ever tried to learn something new without directions?”

  • “How did that feel?”

Brief discussion about why clear instructions help us succeed.

Introduce today’s focus:
“We are learning how teachers help students learn by using something called explicit instruction.”

2. Direct Instruction – I Do (10 minutes)

Write on the board:

Explicit Instruction = Clear teaching with modeling and practice

Explain the 4 steps:

  1. I Do (Teacher models)

  2. We Do (Practice together)

  3. You Do Together (Partners/groups)

  4. You Do Alone (Independent work)

Now model a skill. Example: Finding the Main Idea

Project a short paragraph. Think aloud:

“I’m noticing repeated words… I’m asking myself, ‘What is mostly about?’ I’m underlining key details.”

Circle the main idea sentence and explain why.

3. Guided Practice – We Do (10–15 minutes)

Read a second paragraph together.

Ask guiding questions:

  • “What words repeat?”

  • “What is the paragraph mostly about?”

  • “Which sentence states the main idea?”

Students help highlight details while you guide.

Provide immediate feedback and correct misunderstandings.

4. Collaborative Practice – You Do Together (10 minutes)

Students work in pairs with a third short paragraph.

They:

  • Highlight key details.

  • Write the main idea sentence.

  • Be prepared to explain their thinking.

Circulate and support as needed.

5. Independent Practice – You Do Alone (10 minutes)

Students independently read a final paragraph and:

  • Identify 3 supporting details.

  • Write the main idea in their own words.

Collect for assessment.

6. Closure & Reflection (5 minutes)

Ask:

  • “How did the step-by-step teaching help you?”

  • “Which part helped you the most?”

Students complete an exit ticket:

  1. What is explicit instruction?

  2. Why is modeling important?

Assessment

✔ Observation during guided practice
✔ Partner discussion quality
✔ Independent paragraph response
✔ Exit ticket understanding

Differentiation

Support:

  • Provide sentence starters.

  • Highlight first detail together.

  • Use color-coded examples.

Challenge:

  • Ask students to explain why one sentence is NOT the main idea.

  • Have students teach the process to a partner.

Extension Activity

Students create a mini-poster illustrating:
“I Do → We Do → You Do”
Include drawings and examples.
