Lesson Plan

You can turn a page related to any subject of study into a fun puzzle by laminating it and cutting it into a few pieces. For a classroom of 30 students, you might use six images that are cut into five pieces each. Select pages from magazines or calendars. Laminate the pages and cut them into pieces. Mix the pieces of the puzzles and give one piece to each child. The students work together to find corresponding pieces and assemble the puzzles. The first group to have a complete puzzle is the winner.

Variations

  • To add difficulty to this activity, use pages with similar themes or colors.
  • You might use the game as an introduction to a unit and glue a page of information to the back of the images before laminating them.
  • Another approach is to turn a review or list of tips for a test into a puzzle, which might be printed on various colors of paper.
  • The activity is an excellent way to form groups. Students who randomly receive pieces of the same puzzle will work together on the day's lesson or a project.

    Assessment

All groups of students should form a complete puzzle.
