Lesson Plan: Integrating Information About Native Americans

Subject:  ELA- Reading

Grade: 5

Lesson Objective: To read information about Native Americans from different texts and then integrate the information in order to write about the topic.

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.9- Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.

Materials:

Starter:

  • How much information do you think you need to be able to speak knowledgeably about a topic? (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Before you can write or speak about a topic, you need to know a lot about it.  It is important to read information about the topic you want to learn about from many different sources.
  • Different sources may have the same information, but could explain it differently, have different facts or statistics or highlight different information.
  • When you read many different sources, you can get the big picture of what your topic is about.
  • When you are reading information from the sources, it is important to pick out the information that you think is important.
  • You can underline, highlight or write down on a separate piece of paper the details and information that you think is important.
  • After you have read a lot about the topic and taken notes or underlined the details, you are ready to write about that topic.
  • You will take the information and details that you picked out of the text and write your own paragraph or text about the topic.
  • Be sure to include all of the important details and information, but use your own words when describing or explaining about the topic.
  • Now, you are going to read information from two sources about Native Americans before Europeans arrived.  After you have finished reading, you will write a paragraph using the important information that you picked out.
