Full Day Integrated Lesson: Growth Mindset & Perseverance

Grades 2–4 (Approx. 5–6 Hours)

 

Morning Work (20–30 minutes)

Writing Prompt

Prompt:
“Write about a time something was hard for you. What did you do? Did you give up or keep trying? What would you do next time?”

Extension (Grades 3–4):

  • Include at least 2 transition words.

  • Add dialogue.


Reading Block (45–60 minutes)

Mini-Lesson: Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset (10–15 min)

Write these statements on the board:

  • “I can’t do this.”

  • “I can’t do this… yet.”

  • “Mistakes help me learn.”

  • “I’m just not good at math.”

Have students sort them into:

  • Fixed Mindset

  • Growth Mindset

Discuss:

  • Which statements help us grow?

  • Why is “yet” a powerful word?

Independent or Partner Reading (20–25 min)

Students read self-selected books and look for:

  • A character who faces a challenge

  • How the character responds

  • Evidence of perseverance

Response Activity (15–20 min)

Students complete:

  • Name of character

  • What was the challenge?

  • Did they give up or keep trying?

  • What did they learn?


Math Block (45–60 minutes)

Warm-Up Challenge (10 min)

Give 3–5 multi-step problems slightly above grade level.

Say:
“These are supposed to feel challenging!”

Grit Reflection During Math

If students struggle, remind them:

  • Take a deep breath.

  • Try a new strategy.

  • Ask for help.

  • Don’t erase—show your thinking.

Math Discussion (10–15 min)

Ask:

  • What did you do when you got stuck?

  • Did anyone change strategies?

  • How did it feel to solve a hard problem?


STEM Activity (45–60 minutes)

The Paper Tower Challenge

Materials:

  • Paper (printer paper or construction)

  • Tape

  • Optional: index cards

Challenge:
Build the tallest free-standing tower in 20 minutes.

Rules:

  • Must stand on its own.

  • Can only use provided materials.

After building:
Discuss:

  • What didn’t work?

  • What did you change?

  • Did anyone want to give up?

  • What helped you keep going?

Connect back to perseverance.


SEL / Reflection Activity (30–40 minutes)

Create a “Power of Yet” Poster

Students create a mini-poster with:

  • “I can’t ______ yet.”

  • A drawing of themselves trying

  • 3 strategies they can use when things feel hard

Examples:

  • Ask for help

  • Break it into steps

  • Try again

  • Practice

  • Take a short break

Hang posters around the room if appropriate.


Closing Circle (15–20 minutes)

Ask students to share:

  • One time today they showed grit

  • One strategy they used

  • One thing they will try again tomorrow

End with this class chant:

“When it’s hard, we don’t quit —
We take a breath and show some grit!”


Simple Behavior Expectations for the Day

You can write this on the board:

Today we:

  1. Try our best.

  2. Use kind words.

  3. Keep going even when it’s hard.

  4. Help others grow.


Minimal Materials Needed

  • Tape

  • Chart paper or whiteboard
