
Prompt:
“Write about a time something was hard for you. What did you do? Did you give up or keep trying? What would you do next time?”
Extension (Grades 3–4):
Include at least 2 transition words.
Add dialogue.
Write these statements on the board:
“I can’t do this.”
“I can’t do this… yet.”
“Mistakes help me learn.”
“I’m just not good at math.”
Have students sort them into:
Fixed Mindset
Growth Mindset
Discuss:
Which statements help us grow?
Why is “yet” a powerful word?
Students read self-selected books and look for:
A character who faces a challenge
How the character responds
Evidence of perseverance
Students complete:
Name of character
What was the challenge?
Did they give up or keep trying?
What did they learn?
Give 3–5 multi-step problems slightly above grade level.
Say:
“These are supposed to feel challenging!”
If students struggle, remind them:
Take a deep breath.
Try a new strategy.
Ask for help.
Don’t erase—show your thinking.
Ask:
What did you do when you got stuck?
Did anyone change strategies?
How did it feel to solve a hard problem?
Materials:
Paper (printer paper or construction)
Tape
Optional: index cards
Challenge:
Build the tallest free-standing tower in 20 minutes.
Rules:
Must stand on its own.
Can only use provided materials.
After building:
Discuss:
What didn’t work?
What did you change?
Did anyone want to give up?
What helped you keep going?
Connect back to perseverance.
Students create a mini-poster with:
“I can’t ______ yet.”

3 strategies they can use when things feel hard
Examples:
Ask for help
Break it into steps
Try again
Practice
Take a short break
Hang posters around the room if appropriate.
Ask students to share:
One time today they showed grit
One strategy they used
One thing they will try again tomorrow
End with this class chant:
“When it’s hard, we don’t quit —
We take a breath and show some grit!”
You can write this on the board:
Today we:
Try our best.
Use kind words.
Keep going even when it’s hard.
Help others grow.
