Six Ideas for Using Blogs in the Classroom

Blogging is a great way for students to express themselves without the pressure of assessment. With blogs, students can free-write, work on their individual writing styles and learn more about themselves. Sharing a classroom blog is the perfect collaborative activity and a wonderful way to keep students intrigued, informed and connected. Making students' posts visible outside of class--and sharing their progress with family--can also be a terrific motivator.

Examples of classroom-friendly blogging platforms and similar resources include

Once you have chosen a platform, there are many routes you can take with students. Here are six engaging ideas:

  1. Photojournalism/Photography: This not only introduces an interesting profession, but also gives students a potential hobby and the opportunity to consider various perspectives. Focus on a specific genre of photos, such as people or places around town, or let students choose the focus. Kids can enhance their photography and editing skills and have fun in the process.

  2. Recipes/Cooking: This tasty blog will not only encourage students to learn how to cook, but will also give them the chance to spend time with their families. Have kids upload recipes, directions and photos of the results. They'll get good writing practice and learn to follow directions effectively. Students can also bring in their masterpieces for other students to try.

  3. Book Club/Reading Log: Try this either during the school year with assigned readings or during the summer, when students can write short book reviews and spark conversation about their latest reads. This is a good way for young people to work on their creative writing as well as their critique writing (e.g., explaining their favorite parts or least-favorite parts of a book). Posts also can serve as a reading log, letting teachers monitor how many books students are reading for pleasure.

  4. Movie Club/Movie Review: Creating a movie-club forum is a great way for students to write movie reviews, learn about film and share  favorite movies with others. Students can watch movies in class and write for the blog, or in a club-based format, kids can write about a new movie they've seen in theaters. This type of blog can enhance creativity and encourage students to converse with classmates.

  5. Opinion/Persuasive Writing: Setting up a free-write persuasive blog on important topics takes the pressure off students and gives them  confidence to express their ideas. Topics such as healthy food vs. junk food, or the importance of wearing a bike helmet, can be discussed and debated on the blog. Teachers can monitor the debate, posting tips and other comments beneath each student's post. This gives students important feedback and serves as an informal assessment.

  6. After-School/Summer Activity Log: To encourage students to remain physically and mentally active during the summer, start an activity blog where they can write, post photos, share videos and describe what they are doing throughout the school break. Whether they're riding bikes or visiting museums, have students share the experience with their class.
