Procedure
Introduction (10 Minutes)
- Begin the lesson by engaging students in a discussion about the significance of healthy habits for long-term well-being. Ask them to share their thoughts on why it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
- Introduce the concept of a personal wellness plan. Explain that it is a set of goals and strategies individuals create to maintain and improve their overall well-being.
- Discuss the key components of a personal wellness plan, including but not limited to these four areas:
- Exercise: Physical fitness is the cornerstone of a personal wellness plan. Engaging in regular exercise not only improves physical health but also enhances mental clarity and emotional well-being.
- Nutrition: Balanced nutrition is another vital aspect of a personal wellness plan. It is important to nourish our bodies with a balanced combination of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).
- Stress Management: Stress has become a pervasive aspect of modern life, negatively impacting our overall well-being. Therefore, a personal wellness plan must incorporate effective stress management techniques.
- Rest: Sleep quality is vital to our physical and mental health. Designing a personal wellness plan should prioritize establishing a consistent sleep routine.
- Explain that everyone's wellness plan will be unique, based on individual needs and goals. Therefore, students will research these four areas and develop their wellness plans.
Body (50 Minutes)
Step 1: Research (25 Minutes)
- Instruct students to think about their well-being and set goals for each plan component. Encourage them to consider their interests, strengths, and areas they want to improve.
- Allow the students to work independently or in small groups to design their personal wellness plans. Provide support and guidance as needed.
- Student wellness plans must cover goals for the four basic areas listed above. Students can add to that list but cannot take away from it. You can vet certain websites for students to access for this activity for clarity and time.
Step 2: Designing the Wellness Plan (25 Minutes)
- Setting goals in the wellness plan needs to have specific actions, strategies, and a timeline for achieving each goal. Emphasize the importance of setting realistic and achievable goals.
- Encourage students to consider resources and support systems to help them achieve their goals, such as family, friends, or community programs.
- Use Canva.com to create a wellness plan poster once your students have solidified their plan.
Conclusion (10 Minutes)
Commitment and Accountability (10 Minutes)
Emphasize the importance of commitment and accountability in achieving their wellness goals. Continue to assess student engagement with the wellness plan each week by having them reflect through writing on how well they are achieving their goals. It is okay if a student is slipping as long as they re-evaluate and make a plan to get back on track.
Assessment
Collect the completed wellness plans for evaluation. Assess the clarity, relevance, and feasibility of the student's goals and action plans.
Extension Activities
- Invite guest speakers, such as nutritionists or fitness experts, to discuss specific aspects of wellness with your students.
- Facilitate class discussions on overcoming obstacles and maintaining motivation toward a healthier lifestyle.
- You may add other components to your students' wellness plan if your students are older. Other areas may include:
- Occupational: As students prepare to work post-graduation, discuss various jobs and studies that may need to take place to best prepare for work.
- Financial: Have students research the cost of living in your local area concerning job availability and potential salaries.
- Emotional/Mental: Students can include various mental health treatments, such as talk therapy, medication, etc., as part of their wellness plan.
Note: This lesson plan can be modified and adapted based on the grade level and time available. Additionally, it is essential to consider students' needs and cultural backgrounds when discussing wellness topics.
