Eight Apps for Teaching English as a Second Language
Students can supplement their classroom learning and build their vocabularies through some innovative, fun apps.
We've curated a list of eight apps for those learning English as a second language in the classroom:
- English is Easy ($2.99): With this app, students are presented with a set of flashcards with 115 vocabulary words including animals, opposites, seasons, vegetables, school supplies and more. Each picture is accompanied by a voice in English.
- Sentence Builder ($4.99): With Sentence Builder, students can learn about words, sentences, pronunciation, grammar and punctuation through moving the words around to build the sentence. Each word can be clicked for the sound of the word.
- Duolingo (Free): On Duolingo, students can learn a language completely free through game-based activities. There is an owl dressed in different outfits there to support players as they learn the basics, adjectives, animals, plurals, sentences, and more.
- Conversation English ($2.99): Conversation English is a great app for those learning English as a second language. Students can practice and improve their skills by learning up to 20 different lessons. Students can also up to 200 common English idioms and expressions, improve learning skills, and develop speaking skills.
- SpeakingPal (Free): With SpeakingPal, students can have conversations in English with a video character and get instant feedback. The app offers more than 100 levels, 1,000 different dialogues, 1,800 sentences, 1,300 vocabulary, and hundreds of quiz questions.
- Hello-Hello (Free): Hello-Hello students can learn English with more than 1,000 words and phrases, 3 different modules for learning the words, practice their reading skills, writing skills, and speaking skills. Students can learn words by seeing pictures and then practice the words.
- Phonetics Focus ($2.99): With this app, students can master the sounds of English and perfect their pronunciation. The app is packed with 20 activities with charts, listen and record, phonetic typewriter, scored quizzes, practice tools, and flashcards.
- Kidioms ($1.99): Kidioms offers interactive activities to learn idioms in the English language. The app uses an interactive notebook to present the idiom, it's meaning, and an example of showing the idiom used in context. Kidioms also offers three activities to help students understand the idioms.
