Carrying the Torch

Subject:Geography
Grade:3-5, 6-8

Brief Description
Students map the route of the Olympic torch and create a travel book of stops along the route.

Objectives

Students learn about Oceania, the islands of the South Pacific, as they follow the route of the Olympic torch.

Keywords

Oceania, Olympics, Australia, torch

Materials Needed

copies of a map of the South Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand; copies of The Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay Route reference; markers or highlighters; encyclopedias, almanacs, and other resources about the islands of Oceania; paper; pencils or crayons

Lesson Plan

Provide each student with a map of Oceania and a copy of The Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay Route work sheet. Ask students to use a marker or highlighter to trace on the map the route of the Olympic torch. (If students have Internet access, you might invite them to explore the torch route more closely by visiting The Official Site of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, clicking About the Games and daily route and then looking at individual dates on the calendar.) Then arrange students into pairs or small groups, and assign each group an island on the torch relay route. Have students research print and online resources to learn about such aspects of island life as population, economy, climate, culture, daily life, and so on. Ask students to create an illustrated report about their assigned island.

Assessment

Evaluate students on the information in their reports.
