Brief Description

Students learn about animals that live in Australia. Students use the letters of the alphabet to create a picture book about Australian animals.

Materials Needed

library sources; printouts from sites listed in the lesson; construction or drawing paper; drawing materials, such as markers or crayons; pens or pencils

Lesson Plan

  • Share with students background information about animals unique to Australia from library sources or printed from some of the Internet resources listed below.
  • Distribute construction or drawing paper and drawing materials. Tell students that each person will create one page of a picture book about animals that live in Australia. Assign each student one letter of the alphabet. Tell students that the animal they choose must begin with their assigned letter.
    Note: Depending on the number of students in the class and animal names, some letters may not be used.)
  • Have students check library sources or print out pictures and information about animals that live in Australia from one or more of the following sites.
  • Have each student choose and draw one animal. Younger students may draw the animal and write a few words about the animal under the pictures. Older students may draw the animal and write a short paragraph about the animal under the picture.
  • When all the pages are finished, arrange them in ABC order. Have students brainstorm a title for the book and a design for the cover.

Assessment

Evaluate each student's contribution to the book.
