Web site creator: Ruth Petsel, Arcadia Valley Elementary, Ironton, Missouri

"I teach fourth grade in an eMints classroom. This special program integrates technology into everything we do in school," Ruth Petsel told Education World. "We have one computer for every two students, a SmartBoard and projector, a digital camera, and a scanner. We use the Internet as our textbooks. It is a wonderful program and we are very lucky to be part of it."

Petsel created Mrs. Petsel's Fourth Grade to provide her students and their parents with a resource that would help them use the Internet safely and with purpose. She posts topics the class is studying, student projects, and links to sites for enrichment, remediation, or just plain fun. She also provides spelling words, homework, a calendar, and general information.

Petsel's site also features a Student of the Week and a Paragraph a Week writing assignment. She includes links to a variety of Web sites on the Class Favorites and Favorite Teacher Resources pages. "I have found so many wonderful resources on the Internet that it is hard to narrow it down to just a few," she explained.

Petsel's students use her site often, and other teachers have expressed appreciation for the resource as well. This Webmaster believes she would have created a Web site even without the eMints program, but the additional training has expanded her outlook and shown her that the Internet really is an incredible resource. Having discovered the richness of the Web, Petsel states, "I hope I am able to help others see what is available for them to use with their students."

Each year, Petsel finds that she is able to enhance her online resource, adding, "My site is a constantly changing and expanding resource, and I try to keep up with it. Every day, my students and I are learning to use this technology in new ways."
