School:  Makassed

Subject:  English as a foreign language

State:  Beirut, Lebanon

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

I was inspired to become a teacher when I was in the fifth grade. My Arabic teacher had the biggest influence on my desire to teach others. I have been teaching now for 26 years and I will never forget how sweet and encouraging she was.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

Experience helps so much. I'm more confident and it's easier to make decisions about the curriculum. The biggest difference is integrating technology in the classroom. It's really motivating to collaborate with teachers from different countries around the world.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Always be prepared and organized. Don't make threats or promises that you can't keep. Love your students, laugh with them, listen to them, let them know that you do care...they need you.

My best day in the classroom was when…

My kids asked me questions about their e-pals. They find it so interesting that there are so many things they share with these young people in spite of the differences.

The best compliment I've ever received from a student or parent was...

When I received a message from a student I taught years ago. She's now a teacher and she said, "I was your student...I still remember how you taught me. You might find it silly, but I remember the way you used to write on the chalkboard with one hand and the other in the pocket of your jeans. Maybe you don't notice it as a teacher. Honestly I used some of your teaching strategies with my students becuase I believe that these techhniques have been so effective to survive that long."

What's your favorite part of the school year?

The second term.

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

Stickers.

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

A sandwich and juice.

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

Cartoon movies.
