Teacher of the Day

Name:  Vicky Moore

School: Helen Hunt Jackson Elementary

Subject: 1st 2nd and 3rd grade

State:  California

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

My mom taught third grade for years and then became a specialist for a GATE pull-out program for a while. When I was little I use to help out in her classroom. She always told me I could do anything I wanted in life.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

My first year teaching I had 32 first graders in an inner city setting. My mom told me I will never have a year like that again...and I haven't. I was hired late in the year and it was a bilingual classroom. I remember wanting to cry when my bilingual aide would leave at lunch every day.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Don't be afraid to ask for help/advice from veteran teachers. Don't take yourself too seriously. We all make mistakes and learn from them. Trust your instincts...you chose this profession because you love kids and want to make a difference in their lives.

My best day in the classroom was when…

I taught a lesson and the big wigs from the district office were visiting. My principal said that I did such a great job that they wanted to come and video tape me teaching. Every day is a good day though when I have 20+ sweet faces telling me they love me and I get to see the light go on when they 'get' something they struggled with recently.me all year, was engaged and created the best project ever. I still have her project as an example.

The best compliment I ever received was...

I recently received a letter in the mail (sent to my school) from a student who is now in middle school. She had to write an essay about someone who inspired her in life. She wrote about me and gave specific examples of things I did in the classroom that made me special to her. The most amazing part was that it was the year my mom had cancer and passed away --- when I was at my worst. I feel blessed to know that even then in the most difficult time of my life I was still able to inspire a child.

What's your favorite part of the school year?

I love Dr. Seuss Day. I dress up like Cat in the Hat. We use eyebrow pencil and put little cat faces on all the kids and they wear hats and eat green eggs and ham. My favorite day for sure! Plus we read all day and who doesn't want to inspire a child to read?

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

doc camera

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

oatmeal and blueberries.

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

Dance Moms
