Teacher of the Day

Name:  Kathy Hoar

School: Brooklawn

Subject: Middle School Science

State:  KY

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

Ann Armstrong inspired me to pursue my teaching career. She was a wonderful mentor and was always there to help whenever her students needed her.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

When I first started teaching I felt overwhelmed with paperwork but I learned in the past years that I would keep afloat by staying focused on what counts. What counts is my students learning to walk away from the classroom feeling that they learned something.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Listen to other teachers and learn to borrow or steal ideas. And always look for new ideas to motivate your students. Learn that not all students are alike and look for student's learning styles that will enhance all student learners.

My best day in the classroom was when…

a student walks out of my classrooms with a smile on their face that they got the big idea from an activity or lesson.

The best compliment I ever received was...

when my students tell me that they are so excited to see me each day in the classroom and that they are having fun learning science.

What's your favorite part of the school year?

The beginning of the school year to see new faces and when students that I have stop by to just say "Hi!"

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

My Smartboard.

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

Oatmeal/milk.

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

"Chances Are"
