Teacher of the Day

Name:  Richard Booth

School: Al-Noor Academy

Subject: English

State:  Massachusetts

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

I had superb English teachers in high school, and after a career in journalism my wife kept after me to be a teacher. All my children's friends liked to hear my parables and analogies.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

Teaching for me is a second career, so some things aren't that different. But society is vastly different: single parent homes, out-of-wedlock births, increased drug and alcohol use, a totally different media landscape.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Remember that you cannot win them all, and that it's not about you in the first place. It's about the young people. Feed off their hope, and overlook their faults. Young people are self-centered. Accept what you cannot change, and have the courage to change what you can, including yourself.

My best day in the classroom was when…

My first day at my present job was the day I discovered young people who thrive on educational challenge, and want to excel. Since then, every day is my best day. I can't wait to get to work.

The best compliment I ever received was...

I teach in a private Islamic academy. My best day was when a student addressed me by an Arabic word I didn't know. When I asked my Algerian-born supervisor, he laughed. "It means 'uncle'" he said. "It's an honorific. The kids love you."

What's your favorite part of the school year?

My favorite part of the school day is after I have arrived and done my morning routine, when I watch the young people coming aboard.

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

My laptop and projector

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

At least an English muffin or two, often with Egg Beaters and a sausage

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

"Casablanca"
