What or who inspired you to become a teacher?
I was one of the lucky many to have had teachers who made a difference in my life. Two in particular in high school helped me gain confidence and move outside my shell. Mrs. Smith was my theatre teacher and Mrs. Nephew was my social studies teacher. They both had a huge impact on my life. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Nephew (now Rauh) is currently my school principal.
How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?
The access to information is the biggest change. Everything is at one's fingertips now. I always tell the new teachers that I had to physically go to a library to do research. I also had to beg, borrow and steal lesson plans and now I can browse the Web and find so many people who share their successful lessons.
What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?
Give it time and ask for help. I never thought I would make it past five years and yet here I am in my twentieth. Time goes fast.
My best day in the classroom was when…
a student, who had done nothing for me all year, was engaged and created the best project ever. I still have her project as an example.
The best compliment I ever received was...
Naturally you like to hear that you were someone's favorite teacher and that you made a difference.
What's your favorite part of the school year?
Graduation is always a favorite. The students and families are so proud. We all are.
What is your one must-have item for the classroom?
classroom performance system
What do you eat for breakfast on school days?
Granola bar and cup of tea.
What movie or TV show do you secretly love?
Twilight
