Site URL: Guggenheim.org
Content: This is the digital, online version of the world-renowned modern art museum. The site not only contains information on the holdings of the famed New York location, but also incorporates the Guggenheim Foundation’s other museums in Venice, Bilbao, Berlin and Abu Dhabi.
Design: The museums’ modern design and aesthetics are felt in the design of this Web site. Yet even with unique lines and content placed in an asymmetrical fashion, the site is clean and easy to follow.
The main navigation allows users to peruse the international locations, and a main feature box displays the most prominent content. There are easy-to-find links for planning a visit and browsing the galleries.
Review: Guggenheim.org is a great art museum site that has limited content for a teacher audience. Also, there is heavy emphasis on seeking donations.
On the positive side, art teachers will love the virtual galleries, which feature in-depth descriptions and interpretations of the work. Brilliant photographs accompany each item, giving the user a feel for what the pieces look like in the actual museum.
Bottom Line: The excellent Guggenheim site, although of limited use for classroom teachers, will be appreciated by art educators and those with a personal affinity for modern art.
