Kids love animals, and the Disneynature film "Chimpanzee" gets them excited about their evolutionary cousins. Teachers can capitalize on that excitement with lesson plans that expand on the themes of the film while aligning with national standards.
The Chimpanzee Educator’s Guide includes over 100 pages of lessons and activities targeted to grades 2 through 6. The lessons are aligned to National Science Education Standards and integrate interactive elements, including ready-to-go PowerPoint presentations to help engage your class. Overall there are 23 lesson plans and a final project lesson. The guide touches on a number of topics including habitats and ecosystems, animal behavior and chimpanzee protection.
The lessons are designed to capture the excitement that the film’s director said is infectious.
“I have always wanted to make a film about chimpanzees, and I don’t think there could be a more fascinating wildlife subject,” "Chimpanzee" Director Mark Linfield said. “They can be playful and tender, cunning, loving, competitive, curious and simply full of fun. They’re just like us, or we’re just like them, however you want to think of it, and when they look out at us from the big screen, it’s impossible not to feel an extraordinary connection and be completely engaged.”
Teachers are encouraged to take their classes to see the film as a group. By calling 888-DISNEY6, teachers can reserve group tickets for an entire class. Additionally, for every moviegoer who sees "Chimpanzee" during the film’s opening week (April 20-26, 2012), Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect chimpanzees.
