When one or more students are absent from school, give another child an absent work form. Have the child carry the form from class to class and record the work done during the period and any homework assignments. At the end of the day, that page may be copied and shared with all students who were not present. Copy any handouts or other teacher-created materials too. The master copies can be stored in dated sequence in a binder in the classroom as a record of assignments. This process will help you too; you won't need to scramble to gather assignments for absent students when parents request them.
Select a colorful, whimsical bag to use to collect assignments for students who miss school. When parents call and want to obtain a child's assignments, place all of the day's information in that bag. Attach a note and ask for the bag to be returned with the child when the make-up work is finished.
