Inspirational movies for the classroom: Five more great ones

Movies can make people laugh and cry, and a great film can have a lasting impact on students' lives. If you're seeking to explore the human condition or a historical event, or simply want to reward students for working hard, movies are an engaging option.

Teachers have many choices for inspirational films to show in the classroom. Below are five great ones, all G-rated and perfect for younger students. Read about inspirational movies appropriate for older students in Part 1 of this article.
 

  1. Up:  Go up in the air on an adventure with 78-year-old Carl as he sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream of exploring South America. On the way, he meets the young boy Russell and many other interesting characters. With this very passionate and sentimental film, students will be inspired to follow their dreams and live life to the fullest. 
     
  2. Finding Nemo:  Follow Marlin and Dory as they travel the ocean deep to find clownfish Nemo after he is captured in the Great Barrier Reef. Teach about the importance of family values and friendship while enjoying an exciting adventure. 
     
  3. The Lorax:  Twelve-year-old Ted goes as far as he can to find the one thing that will win the affections of his crush, Audrey. Ted soon discovers the story of The Lorax, and how one man's poor carbon footprint affected an entire town. Students will realize why we need to preserve the environment, and discover how important trees are to everyday life. 
     
  4. Charlotte's Web:  Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider do whatever they can to ensure that Wilbur will not end up on the family farm's dinner table. Students will appreciate the value of friendship. 
     
  5. Wall-E:  In the future, a small robot is assigned to clean up a polluted and deserted Earth. Students will learn about the importance of protecting our planet.
