Eric Baylin's
Songs to Brighten
A Teacher's Day

Share

Here we are again -- the end of summer and the inevitable teacher's dilemma of how to transition from the quiet, lazy days of summer back into the frenetic frenzied fray of school. We know it's coming, and yet it's never easy. How can we gracefully let go of summer and get back to our work and our kids with full presence of mind and heart?

Seems Like We Were Never Gone

(Sung to the tune of "Get Back" by the Beatles)

There ought to be a manual -- A Teachers End of Summer Guide for Re-entry -- to soften the abrupt shift from the low gear of summer to the high gear of a new school year. Maybe Ill write it one of these days. For the time being, though, heres a song.

Summer came around; we thought it would be longer,
But we knew it couldnt last.
Would have liked another week or two or longer.
Now we gotta get to class.

Were back, were back,
Were back here where we all belong.
Were back, were back,
It seems like we were never gone.

Some had big adventures trips to Greece and Turkey,
Others slept beside the pool.
Minds were far away from school and all the work. We
Needed summer to re-fuel.

Were back, were back,
Were back here where we all belong.
Were back, were back,
It seems like we were never gone.

With the start of school were feeling apprehensive,
What will come our way this year?
If we dont take care, well end up getting tense if
We forget our sense of cheer.

Were back, were back,
Were back here where we all belong.
Were back, were back,
It seems like we were never gone.

How to keep the ease of summertime inside us,
Thats the challenge we all face.
Better not to dwell on how our last year fried us,
Find some quiet time and space.

Were back, were back,
Were back here where we all belong.
Were back, were back,
It seems like we were never gone.

Fill the year with pedagogical adventures,
Find the moments ripe to seize.
Keep the flame of learning burning, never quench your
Thirst for possibilities.

Were back, were back,
Were back here where we all belong.
Were back, were back,
It seems like we were never gone.
