Book Review: Intentional Talk

Title:  Intentional Talk: How to Structure and Lead Productive Mathematical Discussions, by Elham Kazemi and Allison Hintz. Stenhouse, 2014.

Description:  Preparing to teach math can be a huge undertaking. In Intentional Talk, Elham Kazemi and Allison Hintz outline how to engage K-5 students in meaningful conversations that will help develop their mathematical thinking. The authors explain how to discover a mathematical discussion’s goals and build a solid framework for them, offering vignettes that help teachers employ the key concepts.

Bottom Line:  Math teachers know that just because students can explain their work, it doesn’t mean they have a complete understanding, or that they’ll retain it in the future. Kazemi and Hintz make it easier for teachers to find out what their K-5 students really understand, while reinforcing a comprehensive understanding of the main learning objectives in elementary math.

About the Authors:  Elham Kazemi is a professor of mathematics at the University of Washington as well as the associate dean of professional learning. She helps teachers create learning environments that emphasize mathematical thinking and learning. Allison Hintz is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Washington, Bothell. She also works with elementary-school teachers to improve mathematical teaching practices.

How to Purchase:  This title is available from publisher Stenhouse’s Web site for $20 in print and $18 in eBook form.
