As you can see in the news, it can be a dangerous world.
Of course, most of us never have to leave home because of a hurricane
or a tsunami, but there are lots of everyday safety considerations
that it can be smart to learn. Here are some sites that will give
you the 411(plus!) on safety. Included: Links
to some of the best resources online for learning more about safety.
This Education World Guided Tour will take you to the sites pictured,
but the first link for each of the five featured sites is to our
Education World Site Review of that site. There you can see the
grade the site was given and what our reviewer had to say about
the site, and there is also a link directly to the site at the top
of each review.
Enjoy! (Safely!)

Code
Red Rover.org
Code Red Rover.org has a nice dog who takes kids through games,
activities, online contests, crafts, and do-it-yourself activities
to help make safe, smart choices in and around the home. There's
an online safety encyclopedia on the site, alone with resources
for parents and teachers.

FEMA
for Kids
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has this site for kids.
It does have stuff about natural disasters and disaster relief.
Here, you can explore a clickable map to learn about natural disasters,
download coloring pages, play games online, or read stories. The
site includes a list of online safety rules for kids, as well as
lesson plans, guidebooks, mailing lists, and related links for teachers
and parents.

Risk
Watch
The National Fire Protection Association has a lot of information:
safety basics, safety regarding natural disasters, and accidents.
The association's name makes it obvious that they talk about fire
safety, but they also have information on poison prevention, water
safety, and bike and pedestrian safety. The kids' section contains
games and quizzes to encourage children to stay safe.

Safe
Kids.com
SafeKids.com is one-stop resource for everything parents and teachers
need to know about keeping kids safe online. The site includes articles
on child safety, reviews of filtering software and filtered ISPs,
online rules for children, and guidelines for adults. A free SafeKids/NetfamilyNews
Newsletter also is available.

Vince
and Larry's Safety City
Vince and Larry, two of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's
crash-test dummies, take kids on a tour of Safety City; the tour
includes lessons on car, bicycle, school bus, and pedestrian safety.
The site includes safety information and activities for kids as
well as lesson plans for teachers.
