Subject: Language Arts
Grade: 3-5, 6-8

Erin Braslawsky, a teacher at Culver Elementary School in Niles, Illinois submitted this week's lesson, about using detail in writing.

Brief Description

Each student will write the directions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and ask another student to follow the directions and make the sandwich.

Objectives

Students will learn to use more detail in their writing.

Keywords

writing, editing

Materials Needed

paper, pencils or pens, peanut butter, jelly, bread, knife, paper plate, napkin

Lesson Plan

Talk about the importance of detail in writing. Have students write a step-by-step list of directions on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Provide peanut butter, jelly, bread, and plastic knives and ask students to exchange written directions with classmates. Have each student make a sandwich by following the directions exactly.

Assessment

Evaluate students on the sandwiches their partners make. If the directions are complete, each student will end up with a sandwich. If not, some students will end up with unopened jars of peanut butter and jelly sitting on top of a loaf of bread!
