Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.4- Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What is a harvest?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Today we are going to be talking about the harvest.  The harvest is a time when farmers and people who grow food pick it.
  • The harvest is often a time when people get together and work to get all of the food picked and stored before the winter.  In the fall, apples, squash, pumpkins, corn, wheat and other grains are harvested.
  • Sometimes, after food is harvested, people get together to have a big meal and celebrate that the harvest is done.
  • I am going to read you a poem called, “Harvest Moon.”  A harvest moon is a full moon that shines closest to the harvest.
  • When we read poems, many times there are lines in the poem that rhyme.  The rhyming lines help to give the poem a beat and make it sound good when we are listening to it.
  • The lines of poems are sometimes organized in groups that look a little like a paragraph.  Each group of lines is called a stanza.
  • As you listen to the poem, think about the words in the poem and what they mean.  You should also be thinking about what lines in the poem rhyme.  (Read the poem)
  • Does anyone have any questions about the poem?  What did you think while you were listening to it?
  • I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about the poem you just heard.  I will also give you a copy of the poem so that you can read it to yourself.
  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
