Complete a crossword puzzle based on the lives of the Wright brothers.

Objectives

Students will

  • research on their own or in small groups several brief biographies of the Wright brothers.
  • complete a crossword puzzle based on their reading.

Keywords

Wright brothers, aviation, transportation, crossword, biography, puzzle

Materials Needed

  • The "Wright" Puzzle, one copy per student
  • access tot he Internet, or printed biographies from some of the Internet sites listed below

Lesson Plan

In this activity, students will read (or you will read aloud) brief biographies of the Wright brothers. If students do the research, they might do it on their own or they might work in small groups. In small groups, each student might be responsible for reading a different biographical resource [see list of sources below]. If the students read different sources, provide time for them to share the most interesting facts they learned with other members of their groups. Then they can work as a team to complete The "Wright" Puzzle (and hunt down facts they did not learn in their reading).

Biography Resources

Alternate Idea

  • Tape-record the biographies and set up the crossword-puzzle activity in a classroom listening center.

Students will complete the puzzle accurately. They will correctly respond to at least 10 of the 12 puzzle clues.
