Materials Needed
Lesson PlanWhile the Broadway shows of yesterday were hastily and cheaply organized, today's performances require much preparation and plenty of paper [money]! To start this lesson, invite your students to share experiences they have had with Broadway shows. Discuss the elaborate preparations that are essential to making such productions work. Using materials with Broadway history from your library or the article What Is a Musical?, talk about the history of a musical. Examine some Broadway shows either online or in print. (One resource is Musicals.net.) Discuss what makes a popular and successful Broadway show. How would your students select a show for viewing? Now distribute copies of the "Give My Regards to Broadway" work sheet. Instruct students to match the descriptions of the shows to the actual show titles.
