Brief Description

A bulletin board with photos of students makes a perfect backdrop for mini book reports.


Students will

  • select a favorite or recently-read book and use the form provided to create a mini book report.

Materials Needed

Lesson Plan

Cover a classroom bulletin board with colored construction paper. Cut from a contrasting colored paper the letters for the words We Love to (or We [heart shape] to). Then cut out or trace lightly the letters in the word READ; make those letters tall so the word READ fills up much of the bulletin board's remaining space.

Note: You will be filling the spaces inside the letters of the word READ with photographs of students' favorite books, so you will want to make the letters as wide as the photographs you develop. If you use a commercial (for example, drug or discount retailer) house to develop your photos, those photos are typically 3- x 5-inches or 4- x 6-inches in size -- so the letters in READ should be 3- or 4-inches wide. If you use a digital camera, you have more control over how large the image will be and how wide you should make the letters in READ.


Trim student photos as needed to fit inside, or form, the letters of the word READ.

Now, a good bit of space remains on the bulletin board -- space that is perfect for displaying mini book reports. Provide each student with a mini book report work sheet. The work sheet provides space for students to draw a mini book cover and to write some details about, and reaction to, a favorite or recently-read book.

Alternative: Play down the I Love to READ bulletin board headline. Instead of using the photos as part of the headline, trim photos of students reading a favorite book to fit the space on the cover of the mini book report. Glue the photo to the mini book report cover.

The mini book report work sheet includes a set of questions that students will respond to. If you have different question(s) you would prefer to include, simply print the sheet, and use a whiting-out product to cover the question{s) you wish to change. When the whiting-out material dries, use a fine marker to write your question(s) over the deleted ones.


Students are graded on their mini book reports according to standards discussed in advance of the project. (For example, at upper elementary grades, spelling, using at least one higher-order thinking skill, and handwriting might be the focus skills that will be graded; at the primary grades, a carefully drawn picture and well thought-out reason for drawing that picture, might be the basis for the grade.)
