Brief Description

Students create a Mother's Day Coupon Book, full of coupons that can be exchanged for special services rendered by students! A work sheet is included.

Objectives

Students will

  • brainstorm a list of thoughtful things they might do for their mothers (or another important person in their life).
  • use the list and their own ideas to create coupons to give to their mothers on Mother's Day.

Keywords

Mother's Day, mother, gift, check, coupon, present

Materials Needed

  • printable Mother's Day coupons or a coupon of each student's design
  • markers or crayons
  • construction paper and art supplies for student-created coupons (optional)

Lesson Plan

Note: In creating the printable checks or coupon for this lesson, we have tried to be sensitive to children who might not have a mother in the home. One of the coupons on the sheet has a space for special words to replace the "Happy Mother's Day" and "In Mom We Trust" text that appears on the others. Teachers can provide copies of that special check to students who might prefer to give their gift to an aunt, their father, or a special family friend.

What better gift could any kid give Mom (or another important person in his or her life) than a personal promise to do something she would really appreciate? Begin this activity by introducing to students the printable checks/coupons they may give as Mother's Day gifts. Ask students to brainstorm ideas about some special favors or services they might do for their mothers. Write their ideas on a chalkboard or chart paper. If students need some ideas to get them thinking, you can start the list by providing a couple of the following ideas:

  • Wash the Dinner Dishes
  • 30 Minutes of Quiet Time
  • Breakfast in Bed
  • Rake the Backyard
  • Chore of Mom's Choice

Give students time to write and color their special coupons. Students can create a Mother's Day card and insert the checks, or they can use construction paper to make and decorate a cover for their checkbooks. "Mother's Day Coupon Book -- Good All Year Long!" or "Mother's Day Checkbook: As Good as Cash" make great titles!
