Brief Description

In this lesson, students exercise math skills as they analyze the contents of a bag of jellybeans.

Objectives

Students demonstrate an understanding of number relationships, reasoning, estimation, measurement, computation, and creating patterns.

Keywords

algebra, candy, data, jellybeans, math, measure, spring, weigh, weight

Materials Needed

  • Jelly Bellies -- each group needs at least two of each flavor: island punch, popcorn, tangerine, watermelon, very cherry, and bubble gum
  • small plastic bags
  • one metric ruler per group
  • one pencil per group
  • crayons
  • one Jelly Belly activity packet per group (printed from lesson)
  • scale that weighs in grams

Lesson Plan

In Integrating Math into a Spring Thematic Unit, students work in groups to organize, record, and perform mathematical operations with a bag of jellybeans.

Assessment

Teacher evaluates student activity packet for accuracy, and students submit a group assessment.
