Brief Description
In this unit, designed to introduce students to the concepts and activities related to basketball, students practice dribbling, passing, shooting lay-ups and jump shots, and defensive footwork.
Objectives
Students will learn basic basketball terminology and rules, practice skills related to the game, and demonstrate sportsmanship and teamwork.
Keywords
basketball
Materials Needed
basketballs, scrimmage vests, basketball courts with 6 baskets, and hand-written materials about the history of the game, the rules of the game, and basic offensive and defensive strategies
Lesson Plan
The basketball tournament is preceded by two weeks of skill development, which includes daily team match-ups. When the 2-week period ends, students are arranged in teams, in which the skill level is equally distributed. The teams are seeded and a double-elimination tournament is held. Usually, two teams play a full-court game and four teams playing a half-court game. When the tournament is over, we give out prizes for the 1st and 2nd place teams, and every participating student receives a small prize.
Assessment
Student skills are evaluated based on teacher observation. A written exam tests their knowledge of the history and rules of the game.
