The Obama Administration has officially come out against the destruction of entire planets.
The White House’s We The People initiative, an online petition that allows citizens to seek governmental action, is filled with what some would deem crazy requests. Nevertheless, the program promises that any petition generating at least 20,000 signatures will receive an official White House response.
That is what prompted an official Administration statement regarding inter-planetary destruction. A petition posted to We The People requested that the “government secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016.
By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”
This petition garnered over 30,000 signatures, which led Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, to respond, “The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon.”
He lists several reasons, including the proposed space station’s estimated price tag of $850,000,000,000,000,000. Shawcross also poses the rhetorical question of, “Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?”
Shawcross goes on in his response to highlight many of NASA’s contributions to this type of technology: the International Space Station, the Mars Rover, etc. He also encourages students to study math, science and engineering in school. He concludes the official White House response by saying, “If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.”
The lotus flower has been a symbol in Buddhism tradition as well as Hinduism and Egyptian culture. For example, Buddhists have come to associate the flower with beauty and purity and as a symbol of spiritual awakening. The flower is certainly unique. Growing in murky ponds, the lotus rises above the water and mud in all its colorful glory.

As a teacher, I’m always looking for structures I can use in my class that are reusable--activities that can be used for multiple units. Here are a few of my favorites.
Index card swap: I give each student an index card at the beginning of class. I give them time to write down one question for class discussion. I ask them to make sure the question is one that fosters discussion, has...
There are many types of early childhood environments. Think about the environments you have been in or built. As we plan for 2018, what can you do to make your environment better? All children deserve to learn and engage in a clean, safe, and enjoyable area where they feel valued, engaged, appreciated, and successful.

In recent years, educational experts have debated the concept of differentiation—that is varying/altering curriculum, content, and teaching methods to meet the individualized needs of students.
Let me join this conversation by saying that first, I believe differentiation can work to various degrees but requires much training and knowledge. Like education, it is inherently flawed and poses many challenges. I agree with Dr. Jim Delisle when he points out the incredible challenge of...

There are so many things that young children need to learn and develop in a successful way. Early Childhood teachers can do this and help children become productive citizens.

Teaching is a very stressful profession. I have personally experienced the demands of being a teacher and observed colleagues also deal with the stressors of the job, ranging from high-stakes testing, demanding parents, increased paperwork, disrespectful students, increased diversity and differentiated learning needs, and lack of creativity and autonomy.
As a teacher educator, who works with student teachers, I believe that serving in a practicum setting where student teachers gain...

During the past year, we’ve discussed and debated the pros and cons of using technology in the learning journey. Whether we like it or not, kids are growing up in a technological environment, and knowing how to make the best use of good tech is a critical part of preparing them for their future lives.
