Incorporating Podcasts Into Your Classroom Environment: GoKidGo

Raise your hand if you love a good podcast! I know I do! I am in my car a lot, and podcasts always make the traffic seem so much lighter! I also work from home, so I normally have a podcast going during the day. You can choose from thousands of podcasts that spark your interest, give you new information, and broaden your world view!

Being a teacher, I am always trying to research new ways to get my students involved in using their imagination, listening, and comprehension skills, while also learning to form visual images or “brain movies” in their minds. This is where creativity, engagement, enrichment, and fun come into teaching! Podcasts can do so many great things for students, like build confidence, expose them to new and different genres, provide access to numerous subject matters to meet even the most distinct interests, and, most importantly, engage students in literacy activities that will pique their interest and enjoyment in books and reading.

Podcasts are generally free and can bolster what you are doing in your classroom while decreasing the screen time that has begun to consume children’s days (Godsey, 2018). Podcasts can also be taken home and enjoyed, so they are something that you can use to help build that bridge from school to home. Children are good little multitaskers, so they can do chores, wash the dishes, mow the lawn, and still listen to a book or story that intrigues them through a podcast.

I have recently had the honor and opportunity to meet with R.L. Stine and Patrick Carman, two American novelists best known for Goosebumps, Skeleton Creek, and Thirteen Days to Midnight.  Patrick has partnered with a variety of people including R.L. Stine and Ariel Winter (from Modern Family) to launch FREE podcasts on GoKidGo. These podcasts are amazing and engaging, and you will want to start using them in your classroom or at home with your children as soon as you can!

Carman’s main point in launching these podcasts is to get kids to love reading and books. As teachers, we all want our students to fall in love with the transformative world of reading. R.L. Stine and Patrick Carman do this already through their writing: we know our students love their books, but now the podcasts they are sharing are also incredible!

There are three new shows on GoKidGo: Bobby Wonder, Lucy Wow, and R.L. Stine’s Story Club!  Each actor in these podcasts truly makes the story come to life. More new podcasts that will be coming soon are Floozeville, GoKidGo The Show, Family Game Show, and Whale of a Tale. These podcasts make you smile, and some might scare you a bit, but they all have a great story for children and adults alike—I honestly have found myself listening to them solo! GoKidGo shares many wonderful educator resources for the podcasts that go along with the stories your children are listening to.  Sign up here to NEVER miss an episode.

After you visit GoKidGo, you will be excited to get your students and children at home visiting the site to listen to podcasts that will be a conduit back to reading. Each story draws children in for a new adventure. You will be able to have children retell you the story, share with their peers, learn new vocabulary, and harness their excitement about books and reading!

R.L. and Patrick were on the Early Childhood Chatter Podcast talking about the launch of GoKidGo.  Take a minute to listen to what they have to offer!
